This week in AFS Athletics saw Upper School teams enter postseason play while middle school Roos reached the penultimate stretch of their seasons. Read on for some recent highlights.
AFS Varsity Softball erupted for 14 runs in the top of the 7th and final inning on Wednesday afternoon to reverse a six-run deficit and defeat Barrack Academy 20-12 in the first round of the Friends Schools League Quaker Cup postseason tournament. Tori Cepregi ‘27 helped to pace the Roos’ offense with 3 hits and 6 runs batted in. Rainey Flak ‘24 and Gabriela Puntel ‘25 also plated runners with long doubles. Caylsta Salas ‘27 provided sterling defense in center field all afternoon with two spectacular catches and a strong throw to nab a Barrack runner at second base to end the game. The Roos host George School on Monday 5/13 at 4pm in the Quaker Cup championship game.
Varsity Spring Tennis enacted a modicum of revenge in their first round Quaker Cup match at Westtown on Wednesday as the Roos topped the Moose 3-2 after ha ving dropped their regular season contest 4-1. On Wednesday, Ethan Farma ‘25 (6-1; 6-2) and Rayan Majumdar ‘27 (6-2; 6-2) prevailed in straight sets for two team points before Myles Griffin ‘26 and Andrew Lindsley ‘27 clinched the victory in a taut three-setter (7-5; 4-6; 6-2). The Roos now host Friends Select on Monday, 5/13 at 4pm in the Quaker Cup championship match.
Varsity Track & Field participated in the 2024 Friends Schools League Championship meet at George School on Wednesday and came away with a number of individual and relay medals for top-three finishes. The Boys’ 4×800 Meter Relay squad claimed the first gold medal of the afternoon when Augusto Quiñones ‘26, Ollie Copeland ‘24, Casey Smothers ‘25 and Henry Sylva ‘26 eclipsed the field with their speedy 8:46.06 finish. Girls 4×100 Meter Relay squad of Jade Sanders ‘24, Meléa Musongé ‘27, Imani Heath-Cooper ‘27 and Rihanna Williams ‘25 continued their impressive season with a gold medal of their own with a :51.17 finish. Rihanna added an individual 1st place medal with a 35’0” result in the Triple Jump. Other medalists on the afternoon included: 2nd place: Jade Sanders (400M in :57.14); Casey Smothers (800M in 2:03.79); Ollie Copeland (1600M in 10:07.92 & 3200M in 10:07.92); 3rd place: Jade Sanders (200M in :26.01 & Long Jump at 16’5.5”); Stella Simpson ‘24 (3200M in 13:11.78)
Both Varsity Ultimate Frisbee and Girls/Non-Binary Ultimate participate in the Cities Championships this weekend at Lower Perkiomen Valley Park in Oaks, PA. Strong placement at the event could qualify one or both teams for the late-May state championship tournament. Good luck, Roos!
