Abington Friends School Hires Mark Carberry to Coach XC and T&F

Jenkintown, P.A. (October 17) – Abington Friends School is thrilled to announce the hire of Mark Carberry to coach Cross Country (XC), Indoor Track & Field, and Outdoor Track & Field (T&F), effective in the 2024-2025 school year.

Carberry comes to Abington Friends School with a decade and a half of experience coaching and recruiting at the collegiate and scholastic levels. Recently, his work at Villanova University resulted in an individual DI NCAA XC Champion, many top-20 Cross Country teams, and two Olympic athletes. In the past five years, Carberry has led Conestoga High School runners to several top-10 placements in the PIAA Outdoor Track & Field State Championships and PTFCA Indoor Track & Field State Championships. He will join Jess Neushwander as co-coach of Varsity Cross Country in the Fall athletic season and will serve as Head Coach of Varsity Indoor Track & Field and Varsity Outdoor Track & Field in the Winter and Spring respectively.

On his hire, Carberry says, “I was drawn to AFS for the people and the subsequent community that’s embraced me. The student-athletes are goal-oriented, talented, and driven – attributes that are often hard to teach when absent. We’re confident in our team’s ability this year to put their best product on the line each and every race with intentions of competing against the best in the FSL and PAISAA. We’re excited for the greater AFS community to notice our results and hope to welcome more athletes to the AFS Cross Country and Track & Field program in the coming seasons.”

Jeff Bond, director of athletics at Abington Friends School, says, “From his first conversations with AFS students in the interview process to his daily interactions with them now as their coach, Mark has exhibited an emotional intelligence and attention to detail that resonates with our athletes and supports them in their development as both runners and young people. He brings a real sense of curiosity and entrepreneurship to our community; he is a student of running first and foremost, forever searching for just the right way to help athletes reach their potential. We can’t wait to cheer on Mark and the Roos this year on the cross-country course and the track. Go Roos!”
