This Week in Athletics, September 20, 2024

Next week, we’ll see the start of live games for many Middle School fall teams and a community celebration with Fall Athletics Spirit Day on the afternoon of Friday, September 27. Read on to see how some of the Upper School Roos fared this past week on the soccer fields, tennis courts and cross-country courses. Go Roos!

Varsity Girls Soccer kicked off their 2024 Friends Schools League season in dramatic fashion on Tuesday when Keira Kushin ’26 rocketed home a free kick 6 minutes into extra time to break a 1-all deadlock with Barrack Academy and send the Roos home victorious 2-1. Malea Musonge ’27 got AFS on the board early in the 1st half before the visiting Cougars answered. Tough defensive play from Ella Hawkins ’26, Alexa Campos-Teixeira ’25 and Indie DuTot ’27 kept the Cougars off balance all afternoon. AFS goalkeeper Tori Cepregi ’27 stopped 2 Barrack close range shots in extra time to add to her total of 8 saves on the day.

Varsity Fall Tennis matched the Soccer Roos drama two days later when they rallied from an early deficit to upend George School 3-2. Chloe Collet ’26 prevailed in straight sets at #2 singles to start the Roos off on a positive note. After both AFS doubles teams lost their matches, it looked bleak when Serafina Kubersky ’26 at #1 singles and Ari Cambria ’25 at #2 singles both lost their first sets. However, Serafina and Ari rallied back to win their second and third sets and clinch the team victory for the Roos.

Varsity Boys Cross-Country split a pair of races in Tuesday’s trimeet, defeating Friends Select 25-34 and losing to GFS 21-36. Casey Smothers ’25, Roger Chen ’28, Augusto Quiñones ’26, Henry Sylva ’26, Jason Green ’25 and Ryan Brinkerhoff ’28 were the first six Roos across the finish line, all with times below 20:45 at the challenging Belmont Plateau 5k course.

We hope to see the AFS community cheering on the Roos in two weeks at the Fall Spirit Day festivities!
