AFS Student Journalists Recognized with National Leadership Award
We are thrilled to share that four Abington Friends School students have been named recipients of the National Scholastic Press Association’s Leadership Award in Scholastic Journalism—a prestigious honor awarded to approximately 1,500 high school journalists nationwide each year.
Mason Fullerton, Orla Maxcy, Priyal Sanathara, and Miranda Shandell were recognized for their commitment to student journalism and their leadership on the Blue and White, AFS’s student-run publication.
To earn this distinction, students must serve with excellence for at least two years on a student media staff at an NSPA-member school. Advisers nominate students who demonstrate journalistic excellence, leadership, and a strong commitment to the ethical standards of the profession.
“NSPA is pleased to honor such a distinguished group of student journalists,” said NSPA Associate Director Gary Lundgren. “The leadership demonstrated by these students will serve them well for careers in journalism or any future endeavors.”
Each of our honorees has contributed meaningfully to the Blue and White’s growth and impact:
-
Orla Maxcy and Miranda Shandell co-founded the Blue and White in Fall 2023, bringing new energy and vision to student journalism at AFS.
-
Priyal Sanathara, who serves as Features Editor, was previously honored with a “Best of SNO” award for her powerful piece, Elemental: The Importance of Highlighting First Gen Stories.
-
Mason Fullerton has brought a keen visual eye to the publication as Photo Editor, helping to bring stories to life through compelling imagery.
Each recipient will receive a certificate of recognition and the opportunity to wear the NSPA’s teal honor cord at graduation. Their names are also listed on the official NSPA website alongside fellow awardees from across the country.
We celebrate these students for their dedication, creativity, and integrity—and for exemplifying the values of leadership and service that define an AFS education. Their voices and vision are shaping the future of journalism, and we could not be more proud.
