Lend a Hand and Help Extend the Riparian Buffer Along Jenkintown Creek

Parents and other AFS community members are invited to join students on Friday, October 14, to help with the plantings that will extend the riparian buffer along Jenkintown Creek for another 350 feet.

The AFS Outside Committee said the work will focus on a section of the creek that stretches from the pond to Meetinghouse Road. The Abington Monthly Meeting, the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership and AFS Lower School and Step Up Academy students are involved in the project.

The funding for the tree planting and tree protection fence along the creek came from a $10,300 TreeVitalize grant.  The trees range in size from one foot tall to eight feet tall.

About 200 trees will be planted, helping to filter pollutants from reaching the creek.

Lower School students in Early Childhood, kindergarten and first grade classes will be involved in the planting from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Second, third and fourth graders will work on the project from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. After lunch, first and fourth graders will return for more planting.

Feel free to join your children’s class, or just come out to help the community-wide project. Tools will be provided, and  holes for the trees will be opened and ready for the plantings.
