Abington Friends School

About the Program: Girls Basketball at Abington Friends School has a long and storied history, with, for example, a 1926 AFS team honored by the local press for an undefeated season. In the more recent past, AFS has been consistently one of the top teams in the competitive Friends Schools League, appearing in 13 FSL championship games and claiming 6 titles since the League’s inception in 1981. The Kangaroos also claimed the 2019-20 Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) state championship with a 65-59 win over Penn Charter. AFS Girls Basketball is open to interested players of all experience and skill levels, with a Junior Varsity option usually available for the lesser experienced participants. Since 1980, over 30 graduates have continued their basketball careers at the collegiate level along with 20+ AFS Girls Basketball multisport athletes who engaged in a sport other than basketball in college. AFS Girls Basketball plays a challenging non-league schedule against local and regional opponents every season with the goal of qualifying for an advancing in the Friends Schools League and PAISAA postseason tournaments. The Varsity team practices or plays games 5 or 6 days a during the winter season between November and February with off-season and summer training also offered.

• Jayla Greene’s 1st season as Head Coach.
• Finished 7-15 overall, tied for 6th in Friends Schools League.
• Advanced to championship of Quaker Cup postseason tournament.
• Sakinah Abdus-Salaam and Nyla Coleman were leading scorers.
• Participated in She Got Game Classic in Washington D.C. for 6th consecutive year.

AFS Varsity Girls Basketball Program Highlights

• Since mid-1980s have won 6 Friends League Championships, including 2 straight from 2016-18. Won 3 titles in a row from 2004-07. Other title was in 1987-88.
• PAISAA State Champions in 2019-2020.
• Appeared in FSL Championship game 6 times between 2012-2019.
• Compiled four 20-win seasons between 2014-2020.
• Between 2011-2022, 18 alums continued on to college basketball including 10 at Division 1 and 2.
• Made Friends Schools League playoffs every year between 2011-2022.
• Previous Head Coaches include: Debbie Stauffer, Dave Bass, Jeff Bond (2011-2022).
