AFS Launches a Student-Exchange Program in Australia

Students who would like to learn about life and culture Down Under will have a special opportunity to do so under an exciting new program that will launch this summer.

Abington Friends and the Friends’ School in Hobart, Tasmania, are teaming up to offer a three-week student exchange program. Current ninth graders at AFS are encouraged to apply to attend classes at the Hobart school this summer, travel on weekends and learn about the culture. Each student will stay with a host family, and the major cost of the program is airfare to Hobart.

Next winter, 10th grade students from the Australian host families will come to AFS for three weeks.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to have an exciting new adventure in the familiar context of a Quaker school setting,” said Rosanne Mistretta, Director of Experiential Learning.

The Friends’ School is the only Quaker school in Australia and the largest Quaker school in the world, with 1,300 students. AFS alum Nelson File ’78 has served as its Principal (Head of School) for four years.

During the week of January 30, Lyn Johnston, Co-Head of the High School, will visit AFS to answer questions about the program for students who have applied. The application deadline is February 10.
