Middle School Boys A Soccer became the first AFS team to add to the award display case in the Richard N. Berman Athletics Center when they captured the championship of the 2019 Quaker Classic Middle School Soccer tournament at Newtown Friends in October.
In its fourth year, four local Friends School boys soccer teams compete in the Quaker Classic two-day tournament—AFS, Buckingham Friends, Newtown Friends and Friends Select. Last Wednesday, on the tourney’s opening day, the Roos blanked Newtown Friends 2-0 and Friends Select 3-0 to put themselves in prime position to compete for the championship the next day.
AFS completed pool play on Thursday with a 2-2 tie versus Buckingham Friends to secure a spot in the title match. Against BFS, Cameron B. ‘24 earned a penalty kick in the box and converted to give the Roos an early 1-0 lead. In the subsequent championship game, AFS faced the hosts from Newtown Friends and prevailed 3-1 to claim the title. Ruairi R. ‘24 scored off an assist by Cameron B. ‘24 to put the Roos in front early. After NFS tied the game, Ruairi R. and Cameron B. connected again just before halftime to give the Roos a lead they would not relinquish. AFS’s defense was staunch all tournament, led by Ayden B. ‘24, Nathan F. ‘24, Tristan R. ‘26, Drew S. ‘25 and James B. ‘24. The Roos wrapped up their season this week with a pair of taut 2-1 losses to Westtown on Monday and Friends’ Central on Wednesday.
