It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Bruce Stewart, former Head of Abington Friends School and Sidwell Friends School, passed away last weekend. You can find his obituary here: Bruce Stewart Obituary.
The Abington Friends School community deeply mourns Bruce’s passing. His leadership, vision, and deep commitment to education left an indelible mark on AFS. Serving as Head of School from 1984 to 1998, Bruce was a champion of Friends education, dedicated to fostering an inclusive, values-driven community that inspired students and faculty alike.
Shortly after his appointment, he wrote:
“Values are at the center of the curriculum, but they are not shackles to bind and narrow. They are the energizing factors in the ambience of the Abington community that make people actively uncomfortable in the face of injustice and discrimination, and they are the force that binds the Abington family into a centered community impatient for an end to war and ignorance and full anticipation for a world that honors joy and play and concern for one’s fellow travelers.”
“I am saddened that I never had the opportunity to meet Bruce, who was so clearly an impactful and caring leader for our school,” writes Head of School Nicole Hood. “His dedication and vision continue to shape AFS today, and we hope to honor his legacy by working toward the principles he held dear. As we reflect on his contributions, we remember the joy and inspiration he brought to so many.”
Please join us in holding Bruce’s family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched in the Light.
