This Week in Athletics, September 13, 2024

The fall season of athletics at AFS is off to a roaring start, with over 220 Middle and Upper school students currently rostered in the cross-country, soccer and tennis interscholastic programs. This week saw most Upper School teams in action, with Varsity Cross-Country, Varsity Boys Soccer and Varsity Girls Soccer all recording wins on Tuesday or Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Varsity Boys Cross-Country claimed 8 of the first 10 spots in a 5 kilometer (3.1 miles) meet at Lorimer Park against Barrack Academy to defeat the Cougars 21-39 (low score wins). Roger Chen ’28 (21:39), Henry Sylva ’26 (21:40), Augusto QuiƱones ’26 (21:42) and Ryan Brinkerhoff ’28 (22:14) were the first four Roos across the line in 2nd through 5th places respectively. Jason Green ’25 (22:57), Niels Rush ’25 (22:58) and Will Hale ’26 (26:58) rounded out the scorers for AFS.

Varsity Girls Cross-Country topped Barrack 15-50 in a forfeit victory as the Cougars had no runners. Yassmine Wardigee ’27, Ani Melzer-Surkan ’28, Cora Giuliano ’28 and Vivian DeGuzman ’25 raced for AFS. Read about new AFS Cross-Country and Track & Field coach Mark Carberry HERE

Also on Tuesday, Varsity Boys Soccer slipped past AIM Academy 2-1 to improve their record to an undefeated 2-0-0 on the season. John Mazzaccaro ’25 and Zach DuTot ’25 found the back of the net for the Roos with Tristan Reinhold ’26 adding an assist. Goalkeeper Lukas Plourde ’25 turned aside 5 shots in the win.

On Wednesday, Varsity Girls Soccer exploded for four goals to top Solebury School 4-2 for their first win of the 2024 season. Keira Kushin ’26 scored for the Roos and tallied an assist. Malea Musonge ’27, Ella Hawkins ’26 and Alexa Campos-Teixeira ’25 added the other three AFS goals. Tori Cepregi ’27 notched 6 saves in the goal in the victory. On Thursday, the team dropped a non-league game at New Foundations Charter 4-2. Malea and Ella scored for the Roos, who stand at 1-2-0 through their first three games of the season.

We hope to see the AFS community cheering on the Roos in two weeks at the Fall Spirit Day festivities!
